Normally I will think that the information from RAM is wiped out the moment power is cut from the computer. But this research shows otherwise! The information from RAM is kept from seconds to a few minutes and if the temperature is cooled down by using simple tools, the information can be kept for up to 10 minutes! Wow.. this means that if the RAM is being transferred to another computer, then the contents can be read... encryption keys can be stolen and private information is no longer private... or like what this research shows... RAM reading software can be developed and usedto decrypt the information just like that... Scary thought.

How then to protect your information that is stored in computers? I am not in school! I am still on attachment at A-STAR and honestly I am quite bored here... Have just been reading and reading. I guess that can't be helped as the area is something I am not familiar with and it is hard for my mentor to assign me something to do when I have absolutely no idea what it is about...

Haha... good thing is that after two weeks of reading... I am able to ask simple yet intelligent questions. I know they all say there are no stupid questions but somehow I cannot bring myself certain type of questions when the answers are pretty straightforward and can be found by simply reading. I am not one who is able to ask questions off the cuff... do envy those who can just ask question after question to clarify their doubts. If I don't ask any questions, does it mean that I have no doubt or that I don't care if I have doubts or not.... haha...

Going back to the first day of school back in EVSS... do hope that everything went on smoothly... the H1N1 flu situation is constantly evolving and the instructions are constantly changing... teachers are trying to appear cool and calm... as for students... do hope that their learning can still continue as per normal... especially for the graduating classes... this last stretch is very crucial for them and they will need every minute of preparation to ensure that they will do well for the O-levels...

To my classes... I have engaged a relief teacher and gave instructions on what to do.... please do not give the relief teacher any trouble and cooperate with him to the fullest... Do leave me tags on my tagboard if you have any queries so that I will be able to answer you...

Seriously missing school... haha... feel like a student all over again... massive amounts of readings... earphones plugged in almost permanently... constant headaches from the readings...

1 week so far...

I am quite bored at my attachment. Honestly.

I find myself trying to find something exciting to do but honestly, it feels like my university research all over again. Haha... didn't exactly enjoy the research process in U... but the action research in teaching brought back a love for learning again. A love for searching for new knowledge. Sometimes teaching makes you complacent... coming to A-STAR makes me realise that I am very backward in my knowledge of the things that has been happening... makes me excited to want to learn again..

So I will try to find something exciting to hook onto... so that when I go back to school, I will have something to transfer to my students... to excite them to go beyond themselves and dream...

View from my workplace

As promised, this is the view from my workplace and it overlooks ACJC. Last week was my induction and indeed I must say I was wowed by the state and level of research in Singapore. I attended talks by various group leaders in A*STAR on bioethics, the learning of Science and their research work etc. Wow! I was honestly quite impacted by their sharings and was quite of Singapore of what she has achieved through A*STAR.

What was more surprising to me was how each and every one of the people working in A*STAR is so proud of their work individually and corporately. It is normal for them to feel proud of their individual knowledge. I mean, they are among the best in their field to be working here. But corporately, they really sing the same tune! I am attached to NST and my mentor is Dr Khin Mi Mi Aung, from Myanmar. Boy is she passionate about her work, A*STAR and NST. She sings passionately about the work of not just NST but about almost all the other different organisations under A*STAR. Wow! And she's not even Singaporean. As a Singaporean, seeing now the reseach capabilities we can offer, I am super proud of the advancement in science that comes through our hard work.

Side note, I do have a great view at work. Will take a photo of the view I have in my lab. The school I am teaching in caters to the lower ability students and generally their motivational level is not very high. To enthuse them and steer them to aim higher for themselves is an art. I am constantly training myself to perfect this skill yearly.

This year, I do think that the classes are more motivated. I am not claiming credit cos I don't think I did much. The school on the whole did a lot to improve the tone of the environment and I do think that it is taking effect. As a teacher, it gives me great joy to see a recalcitrant student turning over a new leaf and putting in effort to take charge of his/her life. I am seeing more and more such students and honestly, I am very proud of them. It is not easy to put brakes on a downward spiral especially when everyone around you is not doing so. I am proud of these students who are able to put brakes on their self-destructive habits and break free from the habits. I often wonder what will be my response if I were in their shoes.... I am proud of them because I think they are better than me when I was in my younger days. They put brakes on themselves, make a big U-turn and push themselves on against all flow to better themselves.

Man I am proud of these students. But I do hope that their change will last. It is not easy to build lasting change but I do hope this bud of change I am seeing is one of permanence. I will do all I can to water, nurture and grow these budding talents into maturing pillars of the society.

I will. I can. I am.

KING OF SCIENCE!!!!

Physics is the KING OF SCIENCE!!!! Haha... and I ensured that I will do this by making sure people pressure me now and then..

So you students out there... if you see this blog languishing in cyberspace... drop me a tag or just let me know in school!

Physics is the KING OF SCIENCE!!!

Joash has arrived!

My baby boy Joash has arrived in this world on 1 Sept 2008 at 8.35 am weighing a whooping 3.68 kg! Woohoo! The first time I carried him... the whole moment felt so surreal... you know... like when you anticipate anxiously and eagerly for something to happen and when it finally happens, you think that this cannot be it... he looks so cute! Not just because I am his father... but honestly I think my boy is the cutest!

Will post pics later... but serious lack of sleep now. Wife had a c-section and needed time to recover as her wounds are very painful which leaves only me to run around and get everything done... 3 hourly feeds and the stream of visitors... leaves me no time to rest...

Yeah! I am now officially a father! And next year... FINALLY... I can start receiving hong-baos again... for baby Joash... hehe....

Just finished the chapter on radioactivity with the students. Today I took sick leave cos this fat body of mine is taking a long time to fight the flu... man my back is aching like mad and I cannot walk without feeling the pain in my back... Drowsy but hopefully my flu will get better cos I WANT to go BACK to school... cannot believe I am saying this but I do want to go back to school... I want my students to study (although I know a lot of them are not putting enough effort) but I know they will not do work when relief teachers are there...

Sure hope I will be better by tonight... Pray for healing for me if you are a Christian... pray that God will heal me fast!

I know...

It's been a while since I blogged on this site... give me some time... will try to blog something... soon...

Martial Arts Physics

The video shows how accurately the martial arts experts can jump.... and the path they take must correspond to the theoretical path computed by Newton's equations of motions... To my older students who are reading this blog, this video may have more relevance as it attempts to shed light and understanding on the initial confusion about quantum events, that occurrences are purely random and arbitrary. The final result of the quantum events cannot be accurately predicted yet with a certain certainty, things can be predicted. Talking in circles? Haha... that's what I feel Quantum Physics is sometimes... I do like the video though and there are many parts to the video... think this is just the tip of the iceberg!

Hurricane Balls

Thought it is such a simple demo and yet so captivating. I thought this is way cool... though very dangerous! I am not too sure how the teacher did it but I can guess why the students were not hurt. Water has a high heat capacity and the heat absorbed from the flames are taken directly in by the water and vaporises it. In doing that, the students are kept safe from the heat. A similar thing will be using just wet newspaper to mold hot glass (about 1500 degrees celsius). I did that in Japan, molding glass with bare hands protected by only wet newspapers! Will search for that photo and try to post it on my blog... Two of my students also did the same thing as me... Ruwan and Castillo...

String Theory

Ok... I think this new theory is way out of my students' understanding... in fact I am struggling to understand it myself! One thing's for sure... no one knows how the universe began and survives until now... Newton tried to explain with gravity... Electricity and magnetism theories seemed so revolutionary when they first appeared... Einstein searched in vain for a unifying theory... Everyone is trying to come out with an explanation of how the world is working... or rather how God works...

Have posted a link to a website that has really very nice videos narrating this string theory... Very cool videos but takes time and preferably watched over broadband... If anyone is interested to read the book... can find me... it's "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene

How much sugar is there in a can of soda?

I watched this video and was stunned by the amount of sugar that was actually in a can of soda! Man... I am swearing off Coke... for now... can't imagine me drinking so much sugar....

But this video made me realise that quantities are actually very important in daily lives... except that we do not pay much attention to them... We see numbers with units attached to them but many a times forget the actual meaning of the numbers! 39 grammes of sugar may not seem a lot... cos 39 when attached to grammes... hmm... sounds like a small number but we forget that one small teaspoon of sugar is only about 5 grammes of sugar! So 39 grammes is actually quite a big number in relation to 5 grammes. Besides we are talking about sugar which is not exactly a healthy thing to consume in large quantities.... and by large quantities it means more than the daily required amounts...

In Physics, numbers are important. The universe is governed by numbers (I know.... many of the philosophers out there will be opposing this but let me just say this as a point of view from someone studying physics) and the numbers will make no further sense if there are no units attached to them...

And this is the first important lesson in Physics... numbers need to be followed by their units because then the whole meaning of the information given by the numbers themselves will be made clear to the reader.... Hmmm.... can understand? Haha... I know I am rambling on.... but guess what? That's the title of my blog!

Till I post again...

New Year 2007

This is a brand new year and I do hope to try out something new for my teaching. I have always talked to my students about the interesting websites that I stumbled upon in my web surfing and showed them in class. However it is hard to have a central reference point with my students as it's not always easy for them to remember all the websites... or that they can't be bothered to go check it out! In any case, I think keeping a blog for me on Physics stuff is good... helps me keep updated with any current trends and keeps me in touch with my students, both present and past.

Do hope that it will be a useful resource.
